The Piła County
on the Way to Success
Interview with Tomasz Bugajski,
Governor of the Piła County

- In what aspects will this
term of office differ from the previous one in
the Piła County? Will you continue the policy
implemented to date or do you intend to modify
development directions for this Wielkopolska district?
- Progress of the Piła County depends on several
factors, which are interrelated and must be coordinated
in order to achieve success. I would like to concentrate
more on EU funds that will be available to the
Wielkopolskie Province in the years 2007-2013.
Effective policy of applying for and acquiring
EU funds can to a large degree affect the actions
of county authorities. No local government in
Poland enjoys such a comfortable position that
it does not need to apply for external funds for
their investments. This is why a top priority
for me is to accumulate funds earmarked in the
county budget. However, we will not be successful
unless we cooperate with municipalities forming
the Piła County. This is why we have started a
closer cooperation. I am well aware of the fact
that projects with supra-local character stand
the biggest chance of receiving co-financing,
this is why we will concentrate on them in our
cooperation with municipalities, which should
affect the development of the whole region. So
in this term, we will concentrate more on content-related
work, which will result in the growth of attractiveness
of northern part of the Wielkopolskie Province.

- On what issues will you place emphasis
in this term of office?
- I would like to focus on the development of
villages and rural areas and bridging the gap
between the town and the country. Our county is
mainly composed of rural areas, this is why agriculture-related
issues are among my priorities. Another task,
on which I will concentrate in this term, will
be adapting the county's educational offer to
the needs of local labor market. Ialso intend
to greatly improve safety of county roads. I already
have specific plans, which I will put into practice
during this term of office.

- What are the major attributes of the Piła
County?
- There are many of them. The largest potential
of the Piła County is its nature. The region is
very picturesque and extremely attractive for
tourists. Several kilometers wide Toruń-Eberswald
Pradolina is the predominant element of local
landscape. The River Noteć, which has been rediscovered
by the water tourism industry, runs through the
pradolina. Major local attractions include: The
Dąbrowa Hill near Skrzatusz, Dębowa Góra Hill
near Wyrzysko and Góra Rzadkowska Hill east of
Kaczor. The Piła County is the dream destination
for tourists looking for peace and quiet and contact
with untarnished nature. Several lakes and extensive,
mainly pine forests (in the summer abundant with
berries and mushrooms) are the main strength of
the region. Another major attraction is the open
air Museum of Folk Culture in Osiek on River Noteć,
where several exhibits of regional folk culture
and arts have been gathered. The Piła County offers
excellent conditions for practicing active tourism.
Care for natural environment is closely related
with seeing development opportunity for the region
in tourism. Several leisure and recreation centers
already operate in the region; a growing number
of agritourism farms, B&B hotels and catering
facilities are being established. I believe that
the expansion of tourism infrastructure will boost
the attractiveness of the district. Here Isee
an opportunity for investors willing to place
funds and contribute to better use of attributes
of the Piła County.
