Royal Town
of Sandomierz

|
|
Sandomierz is a unique town
with 1,000 years of history, picturesquely located
on the River Vistula, between Kraków and Warsaw,
in the place where the River Sun flows into Vistula.
Location on a steep slope of the Świętokrzyskie
Mountains, which are suddenly cut by the flowing
river only add to the town's attractiveness. Stately
town walls and green parks and gardens make visitors
stop there and admire local beauty.

After the foundation of the Polish State, Sandomierz,
next to Kraków and Wrocław, played the role of
a sedes regni principales, i.e. main ruler's seat.
Later, it served as the capital of the Sandomierz
Duchy, and of Sandomierz Province. The Province
was so large that even though the establishment
of the Lublin Province in the 15th c reduced its
size, the governor of the Sandomierz Province
was the fourth most important official in the
Senate of the Republic of Poland. A princely grave
dating back to the times of Roman empire proves
the long history and importance of the region.
The royal town, which was rich thanks to its affluent
residents, enjoyed numerous privileges granted
by individual monarchs. Traders' caravans passing
through the town offered their goods for sale
and local traders dug deep in the ground to build
adequate cellars and stores for them, which today
can be seen along the Underground Tourist Route.
Several centuries later, they were a cause of
concern, as they must have been strengthened in
order to prevent the subsiding of the old-town
hill.

Tourists coming to Sandomierz will find original
medieval street layout and development there.
Knight fights and Renaissance dance shows organized
there each weekend of the tourist season augment
the historic appeal of the town. You can meet
a Piast era warrior walking down the old square
or a Hussar riding a horse there. In Sandomierz,
the traditional melts with the modern.
From the deck of one of excursion ships that sail
along the River Vistula, you can admire the panorama
of the Old Town. The Opatowska Gate, the only
preserved town's gate, is a very popular local
spot and flagship of Sandomierz, from which you
can admire the view over green forests of the
former Sandomierz Primeval forest, which reached
out to the Roztocze region. Among frequent visitors
to the town are residents of neighboring Tarnobrzeg
and Stalowa Wola.
Sandomierz features 120different historic sights.
The most popular ones, apart from the Opatowska
Gate, include the Renaissance Town Hall, Cathedral
and Castle that date back to the times of King
Casmir the Great, and four hundred years old Collegium
Gostomianum, one of the oldest schools in Poland.
Tourist season lasts from April to October in
Sandomierz and visitors to the town can attend
numerous events held there. The most popular ones
include Strawberry Sunday, Music in Sandomierz
and Szantomierz Festival, as well as the Jagiellonian
Fair and two-day St Vincent's church fair. The
town offers ample accommodation to tourists. Different
class hotels, motels, inns, campsites, boarding
houses, hostels, BBs and agritourism farms will
cater for everyone's needs.
Three schools of higher education and a number
of associations supporting local communities activity
operate there. Not only local residents, but also
fans of Sandomierz from abroad who fell in love
at the first sight with the town and were captivated
by the beauty of its charming spots are members
of the associations.
