Priorities
of Piotrków Trybunalski
Panorama talks with
Krzysztof Chojniak,
Mayor of Piotrków Trybunalski
|
|
|
|
- How will this term of office
differ from the previous one in Piotrków Trybunalski?
- Local residents are satisfied with changes introduced
over the past years in Piotrków Trybunalski. The
initiatives including the construction of W-Z
(east-west) route and Piotrków Trybunalski beltway,
as well as the modernization of John PaulII Park
undoubtedly mark positive trend in the town, which
I am going to continue.
A top priority for me is the use of all the possibilities
for the acquisition of external funds for the
financing of municipal investments, the list of
which is long. It is worth mentioning such major
investments as the modernization of a sewage treatment
plant and construction of municipal stadium.
Housing construction is another priority and I
will make my best efforts to ensure that new houses
are built in the town. One of the first documents
Ihave signed was the donation of a building plot
for Social Housing Association for the construction
of a new apartment block.

I also wish to improve the town's aesthetics,
and in particular enhance the historic part of
Piotrków Trybunalski. On this issue I will differ
from my predecessors in such a way that, apart
from words, I have money for this purpose. Activities
on the part of local officials and mine have resulted
in the acquisition of EU funds for the revitalization
of the central part of the town. We have prepared
a project entitled Many Cultures Tract, which
has been approved by the European Union and Piotrków
Trybunalski will receive PLN 16.5m from an indicative
program funds.
Another issue, which I am going to emphasize,
is the improvement of local residents' safety.
I have already taken steps related to it and have
reintroduced night patrols of the Municipal Police.
Piotrków Trybunalski has dynamically developed
in the recent years and I can risk saying that
it is becoming a logistics center for Poland.

- What issues of economic and cultural life
will you give the priority?
- The most important task is the use of tourist
potential of the town. For this purpose, we have
prepared the project entitled Many Cultures Tract,
which refers to multicultural history of Piotrków,
and will reinstate tourist, cultural, economic
and public functions of the downtown. As far as
economy is concerned, improvement of the accessibility
of economic subzones of Łódź Special Economic
Zone is a major task. This is why the town is
developing plans for the reconstruction of roads
leading to the economic centers.
The town also promotes the development of Loan
Guarantee Fund for small and medium-sized enterprises.
And as far as culture is concerned, I have concentrated
on improving the facilities of cultural institutions
in the town.
We will continue the implementation of the project
entitled European Scenes of Stefan Jaracz Theater
in Łódź, and as a result, the town will have a
modern entertainment hall at the Municipal Culture
Center, and local residents will have an opportunity
to attend theater performances. The project is
implemented with the use of funds coming from
the European Union.
Another urgent task is the construction of a new
seat for Municipal Public Library and the overhaul
of the existing one, which is a historic Synagogue.
We are working to acquire funds for this purpose
from the European Union and the Ministry of Culture
and National Heritage. I also place large emphasis
on the development of cultural life in our town
and amateur artistic movements.
- What are the opportunities and hazards of
this term of office?
- I am positively disposed to the future. The
region is blooming in several areas, however,
in the light of new projects related to the region,
we need to solve the growing problem of the migration
in search of work. The town has a growing number
of offers for ambitious youth, university graduates
and well-qualified workers, who until recently
had to look for jobs abroad. New companies that
are being established in Piotrków Trybunalski
and its neighborhood, to mention Haering Poland
and Poland Central Logistics Park, create growing
opportunities for employment.
Modern Piotrków Trybunalski also stands for the
development of tourism. With the use of Many Cultures
Tract, we want to show to the tourists our town
as being the melting pot for different cultures
and a historic town, where Polish jurisdiction
and parliamentary tradition originated.
