Częstochowa
Towards better Tourist Information

wersja polska

Tourist information is one of the most important elements of tourist infrastructure. It is not possible to effectively promote a region without an efficient information system. Despite the existence of elements of tourist information in Częstochowa, so far the city has lacked a unified system for collecting, processing and distributing information or uniform, visible signs along throughways and in the city. It is necessary for Częstochowa to introduce such a system in order to render quality services to pilgrims and tourists. The City of Częstochowa has obtained funds from the Integrated Operational Program for Regional Development to implement the Municipal Tourist Information System project. Its main goal is providing easier access to tourist and cultural facilities by developing a comprehensive cultural and tourist information system and hence magnify the importance of tourism as a factor stimulating social and economic growth.

The project consists of two complementary parts i.e. an IT system and a visual information system. The concept of the Municipal Tourist Information System provides for:
- installing 50 information points (unmanned tourist information points) in locations most important for tourist services;
- developing a network combining a homogenous system and methodology of collecting, processing, verifying and giving access to information on all entities partaking in the project;
- starting up and maintaining an Internet portal offering a tourist database of Częstochowa and the surroundings;
- establishing a homogenous system of marking streets, historic buildings and tourist attractions with information boards; marking routes for walkers, drivers and cyclists.

The Municipal Tourist Information System operating within an extensive network will be an Internet portal equipped with a number of functionalities, including:
- accommodation booking;
- reviewing the database of Częstochowa facilities;
- an extended system of facility identification;
- an extended booking system: train tickets, taxis;
- E-mailing facilities.
The Internet portal will include information about Częstochowa and the surroundings together with a complete accommodation and catering services database as well as other practical information. This portal will be also accessible from mobile devices such as mobile phones and palmtops.
On the other hand, a visual information system will be introduced by installing collective information boards, including a schematic map of Częstochowa and boards for specific sights. Dedicated boards will be placed along the main transportation routes and in the vicinity of tourist attractions. There will also appear signs for pedestrians. The marking system will comply with the solutions applied in the European Union.
The Municipal Tourist Information System project is planned to be concluded in the first six months of 2008; its cost will amount to PLN 4.4 million. European Union funds will cover 75% of the project qualified costs.
The project will contribute to boosting the number of individuals taking advantage of tourist information by giving easier and more ready access to information and upgrading tourist services standards. This should result in a larger group of tourists visiting Częstochowa.
