Zb±szynek,
an Open Town
Interview with Jan Mazurek,
Mayor of Zb±szynek

- What are the advantages
of the European integration for Zb±szynek and
how does the town benefit from its border location
close to the well-developed German economy?
- The main advantages of the European integration
include access to support funds. Thanks to these,
in 2006, we completed the construction of a wastewater
treatment plant. And as far as being situated
close to the border is concerned, the greatest
benefits are observed in the field of culture
and education.

- The Municipal Development Strategy emphasises
the importance of providing conditions for the
development of the local economy. What assets
does the municipality offer to entrepreneurs?
- The municipal authorities are committed to ensuring
that the municipality functions and grows in the
best possible way. We are also continuously and
effectively seeking the financial, material and
technological resources that enable us to better
fulfil the needs of the local community. This
is expressed by creating possibilities for the
growth of businesses, trade, constructions and
education as well as the enhancement of our relationships
with the neighbouring municipalities and our international
contacts. The Municipality of Zb±szynek is an
attractive site for business investments offering
investors extremely attractive conditions in terms
of finance, location and infrastructure.
The opening of Swedwood Poland Sp. z o.o. furniture
factory, which belongs to the Swedish IKEA Concern,
has been a significant event in the development
of the municipality. Winning this strategic investor
and the pro-investment attitude of the local government
contributes to the municipality's dynamic growth
and attracts new investors, including those who
cooperate with the furniture factory and many
others. But we are not stopping there. The municipality's
local spatial development plans offer many sites
for housing, commercial and industrial developments
as well as storage and warehousing areas. The
total surface of the sites that are offered for
industrial development in Zb±szynek and its adjacent
areas is 65 hectares, and it is possible to adapt
the spatial development plans to the needs of
investors. The town has a complete infrastructure
for operating businesses, i.e. banks, a good telecommunications
network throughout the whole municipality, power
supply facilities with a power reserve and a gas
supply system as well as a water supply and a
wastewater disposal system plus a new wastewater
treatment plant. The offered sites are located
in a well-developed technical and road infrastructure
zone. The large storage and warehousing areas
are situated within the premises of the Polish
Rail (PKP) and offer track systems with sidings
and overhead cranes for forwarding goods via railway
transport.

- How do the municipal authorities intend
to provide financing for the improvement of the
technical infrastructure? Do the plans anticipate
the involvement of European funding?
- The municipality intends to finance the technical
infrastructure improvement projects mainly from
various European funds, but we have secured the
resources for our “own contribution". We are currently
completing the documentation work related to this.
- How will the changes in the field of production,
commerce and tourism affect the life standards
of the local inhabitants?
- The municipality's dynamic economic growth has,
most certainly, contributed to providing the inhabitants
with a better living environment, i.e. good jobs
and career prospects, decent pay and safe residential
areas as well as access to healthy recreation
and cultural facilities. The further industrial
developments and the growing small and medium
enterprise sector provide new jobs, whereas the
systematic improvements of the technical and road
infrastructure, which are aimed at providing better
conditions for operating businesses, are also
advantageous for the local inhabitants. Furthermore,
we are planning to extend our leisure and recreation
facilities, for example by building a new sports
hall and the construction of bicycle tracks. We
are involved in promoting the talented young sportspeople
and students from our municipality, in improving
the educational resources and providing schools
with additional teaching aids. We support non-governmental
organisations and are committed to enhancing the
aesthetics of our municipality which offers many
attractive sites, historic monuments, recreation
facilities and attractive natural assets.przyrody.
