Welcome to Otwock,
a Town with
a favorable Climate
|
|
|
|
Otwock is a town picturesquely
located on the River Świder flowing into River
Vistula and surrounded by pine forests. It is
situated in the heart of the Mazowieckie Province,
in only 25km distance from the capital city. Otwock
covers an area of 47km2, 40% of which are forests.
Transportation accessibility on regional and national
scale featuring direct links with Puławy and Hrebenne
crossing point along Polish-Ukrainian border add
to the attractiveness of the town's location.
Almost one half of the town's area is covered
by pine forests that have healing properties.
Local doctors have used the local climate and
established hospitals and sanatoriums there. Thanks
to its unique climate, the town was awarded the
status of a spa in 1923.

Municipal authorities also intend to continue
this trend by establishing business activity center
based on health protection, recreation, sports
and tourism. Otwock intends to reinforce its image
of a town-park and regain the status of a spa.
Local spatial development plans in Otwock cover
about 33% of the municipal area and the strategic
zones in the town. Otwock has also put in place
a Study for the Conditions and Directions for
Spatial Development.
Several new sites are being earmarked for various
forms of housing construction, ranging from detached
housing to small housing estates with non-burdensome
service activity. Each year, 250 new apartments
are built and local developers and housing cooperatives
face growing competition of new investors who
are attracted by the favorable location of the
municipality.

The town intends to create possibly the best
conditions for living there. It has a water purification
plant, sewage treatment plant, heating and power
plant, communal landfill and many other facilities.
Moreover, in order to meet the local demand and
solve social and economic problems, it has adopted
a Strategy for the Computerization of the Town
of Otwock. Priority investments and actions have
been planned and included in documents forming
social and economic strategy of the municipality.
Favorable climate for investing and settling in
the region contributes to the growing number of
local population. In 2007, the number of residents
exceeded 42,000. More than 10% of the population
are private entrepreneurs. Services, trade, construction
and manufacturing are the most prominent sectors
in the region.
Otwock is implementing a major investment with
the use of funds coming from the European Union.
The goal of the project is to modernize and expand
local water and sewerage system. Thanks to these
activities, local authorities intend to provide
the residents with quality water that meets Polish
and EU requirements, improve the condition of
natural environment, and as a result of public
health. In 2008, Otwock joined the group of the
most efficient local administration units in Poland
and took the 14th place on the list of local authorities
who acquired the largest share of EU funds.
