Sosnowiec

is a city in the Silesia Province bordering Katowice, located 290-km. from Warsaw. It has a population of over 243,000, covers an area of 91.2 sq. m., and is one of the largest economic centers in Poland.
Its location on major transportation routes and road junctions linking the east and west, as well as the north and south, and a well-developed city transportation system constitute the primary advantages of Sosnowiec. The service and processing industries dominate the local economy. Its mining and steel industries are being restructured and intensive development has been undertaken in the electrical engineering, machinery, food and car accessory industries. Companies operating there have upgraded their technology to

meet market requirements and international standards. Several of them have introduced quality assurance systems in accord-ance with international ISO standards. Local manufacturers and companies with foreign capital, including corporations from the US and EU, such as Timken, a world leader in manufacturing cone bearings, Foster Wheeler Energy Fakop Ltd., a manufacturer of  quality fluo-solids furnaces and heat exchangers, ER.SI Poland, which  specializes in plastic spare parts for automobiles, Magneti Marelli Poland S.A., a manufacturer of automobile spare parts, and Atoma Roltra Morse Polonia, which specializes in car door fittings, all operate in Sosnowiec. Growing importance is being placed on services such as banking, commerce

transportation and catering,  where the private sector plays a crucial role. Macro Cash and Carry and Auchan, who have built outlets in the city, have become an indispensable element of the economic landscape of Sosnowiec. In addition, the city offers attractive opportunities for investments in the Sosnowiec-Dąbrowa Sub-zone of the Katowice Special Economic Zone, whose sectors are strictly related to existing areas of manufacturing activity.  What is most important is the fact that development of the areas has already started. Several institutions, including the  Agencja Rozwoju Lokalnego (Agency for Local Development), Stowarzyszenie Kupców Polskich (Polish Trade Association), Cech Rzemiosł Różnych (A Trade Guild) and Regionalna Izba Przemysłowo-Handlowa (Regional Economic and Industrial Chamber) promote entrepreneurship in the region.
Sosnowiec is also an important scientific and educational center. Cultural institutions, especially the Zagłębie Theater, whose centenary was celebrated in 1997, the 'Extravagance' Municipal Art Gallery, Jan Kiepura's Club and the Municipal Museum are very active in the town. The museum located in the Schoen Palace, a historic building from the 19th century, houses a unique exposition of glass exhibits.
Sports have a long tradition in Sosnowiec. Last year, city authorities decided to expand the existing

infrastructure and   build an all-season sports and recreation center
