The Town with a Dragon
of Old and
New Opportunities

Żmigród is an intriguing town. Legend has it that it derives its name from basilisk or a cruel dragon that tormented residents of the town. The beast was believed to have lived in the vicinity of a local parish church, where a water tower is located today. Modern Zmigród does not offer dark adventures, although the local palace and garden complex, a keep built in 1560, the Kolumna Maryjna and the water tower, which is the tallest structure in the

city, are places that hide many mysteries and are mentioned in numerous legends.
The municipality, covering the area of 292-sq. km., has a population of over 15 thousand. The residents of the region are aware of the fact that their    piece of the motherland is one of the most interesting geographical territories in the Lower Silesia region.
Zmigród and the neighbor-ing area are rich not only in long tradition and culture, but are also abundant in natural beauty. The Milickie reservoirs located in the Barycza River Valley have been considered one of the most precious ornithological territories in Europe. In order to protect the natural resources and beautiful landscape, the Stawy Milickie reserve was established in 1963 and the Dolina Baryczy Landscape Park was

founded in 1996. The Park, covering the area of 87 thousand ha, is one of unique European territories, enriching the region's natural, historical and cultural heritage..

Four municipalities: Cieczkowa, Krosnice, Milicz and Zmigród are located in the center of the Barycza River Valley. The area, which has not been tarnished with industry, constitutes a perfect base for the creation of a tourist infrastruc- ture.Prospective investors in tourism can count on assistance and preferential treatment from local authorities.
The municipality has prepared a broad offer for both investors and tourists. The currently updated plan for development for the town and municipality creates great opportunities for new enterprises. The strongest point of the municipality are the territories once owned by the State Treasury, which are now designated for housing construction and business activities.
The transport system is another advantage of the region. The town is located on the local road no. 5 linking Wroclaw and Poznan. The public transport system (PKS and PKP) is also well developed in the area.Investors who would like to start operations in the municipality will be offered several abatements, such as tax exemptions for the creation of new jobs for locals. Obviously, Zmigród promotes ecological industries, especially in the wood and food processing sectors. Local authorities will support investments providing that the activities will be of benefit to the local residents and will not harm the natural environment.
Local authorities encour-age all those interested in economic or cultural cooperation, and are open to any initiatives and exchanges of experiences in local administration and other areas.
"The town of the dragon", an exaggerated name? This can be verified only by time and those who believe in the town's potential and who invest money and effort in the town on the Sasiecznica River.

The atmosphere of its historic streets, as well as the woods and marshes surrounding the town and the singing of rare spices of birds should persuade anyone
