Szczekociny
on the Pilica River

Szczekociny is a town located on the banks of the Pilica River. The first historical mention of the town dates back to the 14th c. and describes it as the seat of the Odrow1? family. Szczekociny obtained a town charter in the 14th c.

During the Swedish Wars, the town was destroyed, and it was not until the second half of the 18th c. that Szczekociny regained its former splendor. It was its administrator, F. Dembinski and his wife Urszula neé Morsztyn who restored the local Parish church and other structures and built a magnificent palace. The palace constructed

in 1787 has survived to modern times and has had King Stanis3aw August Poniatowski among its guests. The history of Szczekociny is related to Tadeusz Koociuszko who in its neighborhood on June 6, 1794 fought a one-sided battle against a combined Russian and Prussian army. As punishment for favoring the insurgents, Szczekociny lost its town charter in 1869.
.

The town regained its charter in 1922. Soldiers of the 8th Regiment of the U3ani of Prince Józef Poniatowski went down as heroes in the history of the town. During the German occupation, Szczekociny was burnt and 50% of its population and the whole Jewish population was annihilated. However, its historic sights including: Parish church from the 17th c, monument and a mound dedicated to Tadeusz Koociuszko; in addition, a baroque statue of St Florian with a Franciszek Dembinski's name and the date 1762 inscribed on it have survived to modern times. Also monuments to the memory of the soldiers who fought in 1939 and 1944 and a palace and garden complex are among local attractions.

The city today maintains a normal pace of life and has plans for the future.  A water and wastewater system is being developed there (two water treatment plants are already in operation), and new roads and bridges are being built. In addition, a water reservoir has been opened and sports facilities including three gyms are being extended. The northern part of the municipality comprises sites designed for construction of summer cottages in Szyszki, Łąkietka, Bugdał, Przyłęk and Tęgobórz. The town also offers sites for industrial construction and ready-made structures in the downtown area. The low level of industrialization in the town and municipality can be viewed as an advantage. The Szczekociny neighborhood has an abundance of fish and wild mushroom. The clean air and environment make the town and its neighborhood a perfect place for recreation.
