We see opportunities in tourism

The Mayor of the town of Rumia, Jan Klawiter, talks about the development of tourism.
In Rumia, within a 10 km radius you can find:
charming Zagórska Stream Valley   with unique flora;
the largest collection of cactuses in Poland, numbering some
7 thousand species;
ruins of a gothic church from
the 15th c.
romantic-style pond and a country     manor from the 18th c.
the Beak bird sanctuary at the  mouth of the Zagórska Stream
a small forested lake with
a bathing area
seaside beaches
- For several years, the city has made efforts to interest its citizens in active means of relaxation.
- Rumia is a young town.  We have no interesting historical sites, which could be of interest to our citizens and attract tourists.  For many years, our town has been considered a bedroom community for people employed in the Tri-cities (Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot).  After the

changes in 1990, the reintroduced local authorities, together with cultural and educational institutions, as well as institutions from outside the municipality, such as the Salesian Association, have managed to reawaken our cultural life.
 Our greatest strength is our picturesque environment and proximity to the Tri-city Landscape Park.  Our forests are so natural and beautiful that their most interesting part, in the area of the Szmelty housing district, is to be covered by strict protection as a nature reserve.  These strengths practically force us to work intensively to develop our tourist infrastructure and to promote hiking and bicycle tourism.
- What ideas do you have for diversifying your tourist and recreational facilities?
- Among the bases for development of our recreational facilities is a proposal to build sports facilities that was directed to the Town Council.  The Council decided that they must begin by building a Sports Hall, which should be completed by the end of this year, and later, a swimming pool, perhaps in the form of a Waterpark.

Further ideas for developing the recreational facilities of Szmelty along with the Tri-city Landscape Park that surrounds it have been proposed. Plans include creating bicycle trails, special routes for mountain bikes, horseback-riding trails, and we even dream of building ski and sledding slopes.  An attractive promenade will be built along the Zagórska Stream, which runs through the center of town.
Of the smaller investments that have already been completed, we can name a neighborhood playing field, built by the city or with the help of the Housing Cooperative and the Salesian Association.
- Due to its location, Rumia would make an excellent location for tourists to stop by when visiting the Tri-cities or the Kaszuby region.  What efforts has the municipality made to attract tourists?
- It is worth reminding that we are one of the few municipalities in the region that has established rules for supporting non-governmental organizations, including those involved in tourism and sports.  This is why much in the way of city promotion is done by the citizens themselves.
The municipality has also placed major emphasis on promotion. We are a member of the Kaszuby Tourist Society, through which we take part in various fairs and issue promotional brochures. These not only generally entice people to visit Rumia, but also thematically promote us, describing our natural monuments, particular tourist routes, and interesting historical sites.  I believe that this kind of promotion brings more significant results, since it also effectively influences the citizens of Rumia, as well, encouraging them to get to know the area.
Rumia is a town of 42 thousand,

bordering Gdynia and lying along the Kaszubian Valley.  Its greatest strength is its excellent location in terms of transportation from the Tri-cities and Szczecin, an absence of heavy industry, and which follows, clean air, as well as the neighboring beautiful forests and picturesque views.  Low architecture is dominant in the city, giving it a cozy atmosphere.  There are many types of places to stay in the town: two hotels and a first-class youth hostel run by the scouts, and next year additional places will be built in a hotel that is constructed in conjunction with the Sporting and Event Hall.  In addition, private accommodations are offered by more and more people, and several good-quality restaurants and diners are available.
