The Town Hall - Symbol of a Town and Local Government

is a true pleasure to hold in hand an editorial masterpiece and admire it for its artistic design and editorial quality. The album entitled "Ratusze w Polsce" (Town Halls in Poland) by Janusz Rosikoń is a unique publication, skillfully linking the beauty of photographs (over 350) depicting former and present seats of town and city authorities (over eighty addresses), architectural elements and magnificent interiors with an extensive knowledge of the structures depicted.
 The album comprehensively documents not only town halls, but also the functioning of local authorities in old Poland, and as if peripheral to the main topic, scenes of the life going on around these structures.
 In order to present a complete picture of the town halls, the album includes reproductions of old town plans, lithographs, steel engravings, post cards depicting town halls that no longer exist, and town charters and other documents granting various privileges to the towns, as well as scenes of floggings and other things related to the wielding of power: the drum of a town hall usher, a forged chest that served as a town strongbox, the mayor's chain, a pistol with the town's seal. Janusz Rosikoń et. al. also discovered some peculiarities, such as lions holding the crest of Gdańsk, which does not appear to be in accordance with heraldic rules, an unhappy couple of lovers (a sculpture from the town hall in Lwówek Śląski), and goats in the tower of the town hall in Poznań, which are "butting" to entertain the public, as well as a scene depicting the knighting of Bolesław Krzywousty (at the town hall in Płock).
 What are Polish town halls like? Janusz Rosikoń answers the question with his photos, which constitute a survey of architectonic styles and construction trends. They can be tall, soaring and extensive structures as in Gdańsk, Kłodzko, Toruń and Szprotawa, or inconspicuous like the buildings in Siedlce, Żary and Kluczbork. Polish town halls can be elegant, like the ones in Płock, Szydłowiec, Kalisz and Zamość. They can also be very characteristic, as is the case with the town halls in Sandomierz, Częstochowa, and Staszów. Some are being carefully redecorated and others are falling into ruin. They can be unique, like the ultra-modern town hall in Koszalin, the very old one in Nowy Warpń, or the one in Sulmierzyce, which is the only wooden town hall in Poland. Their beauty has many faces.
 The album "Town Halls in Poland" by Janusz Rosikoń has been published by Rosikon Press. Moreover, Tadeusz Wrona, Piotr Uszok, Henryk Samsonowicz, Jacek Purchla and Janusz Pazder are the authors of descriptions of the town halls and the notes accompanying the photos.
 The album has been published under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the National League and the Association of Polish Towns.
