Wiele twarzy miasta

Z czym kojarzy się Lublin osobom, które nigdy w tym mieście nie były? Można zaryzykować twierdzenie, że najczęściej, choć oczywiście nie jedynie, z Katolickim Uniwersytetem Lubelskim oraz jego Sceną Plastyczną, z "Budką Suflera" i z "Bajmem". Już z tego pobieżnego zestawienia wynika, że Lublin to miasto o wielu twarzach. Wielokulturową przeszłość Lublina dostrzega się w kaplicy Św. Trójcy, gdzie zachodnia architektura współbrzmi z wykonanymi w bizantyjskim stylu polichromiami. Tuż obok, w Galerii Malarstwa Polskiego na Zamku Lubelskim pyszni się matejkowska "Unia Lubelska", upamiętniająca unię realną między Polską i Litwą podpisaną w Lublinie w 1569 r.
 Brutalnie przerwaną historię żydowskiej społeczności Lublina przywraca pamięci ośrodek "Brama Grodzka - Teatr NN". Gromadzone tu od lat zdjęcia, dokumenty i nagrania, eksponowane na oryginalnie zaaranżowanych wystawach, a także makieta przedwojennego miasta żydowskiego, spektakle teatralne i koncert klezmerów sprawiają, że w Bramie Grodzkiej czas popłynął wstecz i wciąż z jej okien widać żydowską dzielnicę.
 Lublin nie żyje jednak tylko przeszłością. Kultywuje ją, czerpie z niej inspirację i naukę, ale chce być miastem nowoczesnym, potrafiącym sprostać wyzwaniom współczesności. Obok istniejących od dziesięcioleci uczelni wyższych, obu uniwersytetów - najstarszego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego i Uniwersytetu Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej oraz Politechniki Lubelskiej, Akademii Rolniczej i Akademii Medycznej, powstają nowe szkoły wyższe: Lubelska Szkoła Biznesu - Szkoła Wyższa, Wyższa Szkoła Administracji i Przedsiębiorczości, Wyższa Szkoła Społeczno-Przyrodnicza. Otworzyło też swe podwoje dla studentów z Ukrainy Collegium Polsko-Ukraińskie, będące zalążkiem powstającego trzeciego już w mieście uniwersytetu. Młodzież studencka nadaje Lublinowi specyficzny charakter oraz stanowi istotny czynnik możliwości jego rozwoju gospodarczego. Podobne perspektywy stwarza nam współpraca transgraniczna oraz, w niedalekiej przyszłości, rola granicznego miasta Unii Europejskiej. Już teraz Lublin  utrzymuje partnerskie więzi  z 16 miastami na świecie, w tym na Litwie, Ukrainie, w Bułgarii, Niemczech, Francji, Hiszpanii, Danii, Wielkiej Brytanii, Portugalii, Kanadzie i USA.

 Ani krajowi, ani zagraniczni koneserzy kultury nie mogą narzekać w Lublinie na brak wrażeń artystycznych. Zapewniają im je m.in. teatry. Obok trzech zespołów repertuarowych działają tu grupy o rodowodzie wywodzącym się z ruchu alternatywnego. Do najznakomitszych  z nich należą: wspomniana już Scena Plastyczna KUL, Teatr "Provisorium"  i Ośrodek Praktyk Teatralnych "Gardzienice". Punktem kulminacyjnym spotkań ze sztuką teatralną jest jesienny Międzynarodowy Festiwal Teatralny "Konfrontacje Teatralne". Dla melomanów mamy "Arcydzieła Muzyki Kameralnej", Festiwal "Lublin Ľi Plastyka Ľ autorską w wykonaniu Lubelskiej Federacji Bardów oraz Międzynarodowy Konkurs Młodych Skrzypków im. H. Wieniawskiego i K. Lipińskiego.  Sądząc po liczbie  i jakości lubelskich galerii, sztuki pięknie także znalazły w Lublinie aurę przychylną dla tworzenia. Podsumowaniem sezonu artystycznego  są zwykle "Wschodnie Salony Sztuki". Wiele się dzieje w ciągu całego roku. Od pierwszych dni wiosny centrum kulturalno-towarzyskim miasta stają się deptak na Krakowskim Przedmieściu oraz Rynek Starego Miasta, miejsca prowokujące  do spotkań  wielością kafejek i stolików z parasolami, kameralnością i swojskością przestrzeni, grą ulicznych muzykantów, imprezami kulturalnymi.
 Od 7 do 24 czerwca Lublina stanie się sceną wielu sympatycznych wydarzeń rozrywkowych. "Odkryj Lublin" to hasło tegorocznego Święta Miasta - Dni Lublina.  Odkrywcami będą zarówno lublinianie, jak i nasi goście z kraju i zagranicy. Wśród  imprez wpisany w "Dni" są m.in. "Franco-Polono Folies" z udziałem miast Nancy i Lyon i "Dias Portugueses em Lublin", których honorowym gościem będzie Viseu, nasze portugalskie miasto partnerskie. Zainaugurujemy obchody 10-lecie trójporozumienia: Lublin - Münster (Niemcy) - Rishon-le-Zion (Izrael). Będzie również parada młodzieży w widowisku opartym na legendach o Lublinie, "Festiwal Nauki", w którym staną obok siebie KUL i UMCS, oraz prezentacja lubelskich firm i ich produktów pod hasłem "Nasze jest najlepsze".
 A ponieważ nasze jest rzeczywiście najlepsze lub co najmniej bardzo dobre - zapraszam wszystkich do Lublina.

Multi-Faceted City

What do people who have never been to Lublin associate the city with? One can risk suggesting that most often, though not only, they think of Lublin's Catholic University and its Arts Scene, or the bands Budka Suflera, and Bajm. This quick brainstorm suggests that Lublin is a multi-faceted city.
 The multi-cultural history of Lublin is best illustrated by the Holy Trinity Chapel, where western architecture goes well together with Byzantine style polychrome. Next to the Chapel, in the Gallery of Polish Painting at the Royal Castle, Matejko's painting entitled Lublin Union (Unia Lubelska) is proudly displayed. The painting commemorates the union between Poland and Lithuania enacted in Lublin in 1569.
 The "Brama Grodzka -Teatr NN" Center honors the brutally terminated history of the Jewish community in Lublin. Photos, documents and recordings that have been collected for many years, and a model of pre-war Jewish settlements are displayed in interestingly arranged expositions. Theatrical performances, and klezmer band concerts make a visitor feel that time stopped at Brama Grodzka and that one could still see the Jewish district from its windows.
 Lublin does not live in the past, though. It nurtures it, draws inspiration from, and learns lessons from it; however, it also aspires to be a modern city able living up to the challenges of the present day. Next to decades-old universities, like the Catholic University of Lublin, Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, Technical University of Lublin, University of Agriculture and Medical Academy, new schools of higher education are being opened in Lublin, such as the Lublin School of Business, the School of Administration and Entrenpreneurship, and the School for Social and Environmental Studies. In addition, a Polish-Ukrainian College has opened its doors to students from Ukraine. The college will be transformed into the next university in Lublin. College students bring a special character to the city and constitute an important component of its economic development. A similar opportunity for the city is its cross-border cooperation and, in the near future, its role of a border city in the European Union. Lublin has already established partnership ties with 16 cities across the world - in Lithuania, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Germany, France, Spain, Denmark, Great Britain, Portugal, Canada, and the USA.
 Neither domestic nor foreign lovers of culture can complain about a lack of cultural attractions in Lublin. Among many others, such attractions are provided by local theaters. Along with three repertory theaters, there are groups originating from an alternative theater movement.  The most famous ones are KUL's previously mentioned Arts Scene, Provisorium Theater, and the Gar-dzienice Center for Theatrical Practices. The climax of theater entertainment is the International Festival of Theater called Theatrical Confrontations (Konfrontacje Teatralne) staged each fall. For music lovers, we have "Masterpieces of Chamber Music", and "Lublin - Music and Arts-Tempus Paschale" Festivals. Moreover, the Lyrical Song Festival organized by Lublin's Federation of Bards and the H. Wieniawksi and K Lipinski International Young Violinists Contest are regularly staged in the city. Based on the selection and quality of Lublin's art galleries, art has also found good ambiance for creativity here. The artistic season is usually culminated by the Eastern Salons of Art (Wschodnie Salony Sztuki). In Lublin, many interesting events are held throughout the year.

 Starting in the first days of spring, the Promenade in the Krakowskie Przedmieście and Old Town Market Square become the center of social and cultural life. Indoor and outdoor cafés attract visitors with the cozy charm of a familiar environment, street musicians, and cultural events. From 7-24th of June, Lublin will become the scene of a various types of cultural entertainment. "Discover Lublin" is the main theme of this year's city festival called "Dni Lublina." During the festival, Lublin's residents, as well as visitors from the country and abroad, will explore the city. Among the many festival events are "Franco-Polono Follies" with the participation of the cities of Nancy and Lyon, and "Dias Portugueses em Lublin" with the participation of the city of Viseu, our partner from Portugal. Then, we are going to inaugurate a celebration of the 10th anniversary of a trilateral agreement between Lublin, Münster (Germany) and Rishon-le-Zion (Israel). Next, a youth parade will present a spectacle based on Lublin's legends, a Science Festival, co-presented by KUL and UMCS, and an exposition of Lublin's businesses and their products, called "Ours is the best" will be held in Lublin.
 Because we believe that our offer is truly the best, or at least very good, we invite and welcome everyone to Lublin.
