Magnetic Town

Szamotuły, a county capital with a population reaching 20,000, is located on the Szczecin rail route and a major transportation junction only 35-kms northwest of Poznań. The first records on Szamotuły date back to 1231, and it was granted a town charted in mid-14th c. In the 16th c, Szamotuły served as a major Protestant center, and the first printing house was opened there in 1551.
Despite the fact it is a small town, Szamotuły has a lot to offer to tourists. It is famous for its relics of Wielkopolska regional folklore, especially architecture.

In the past decade, ecology has been strongly promoted in the region. Sewerage and gas networks have been expanded and a sewage treatment plant has been built.  Moreover, coal heating was eliminated in the region and inter-municipal cooperation was established to reclaim the waters of the Sana River basin. Szamotuły is consistently working to reach European environmental protection standards.
Agriculture and food processing, including sugar, fat and cereal processing, dominate the economic landscape of the region. Moreover, representatives of the furniture industry operate in the area. What is more, the town offers attractive construction sites. Education is strongly represented in Szamotuły by various schools, including branch campuses of the Poznań University of Economics, the Wielkopolski People's University and an Educational Center of the "Nadzieja" (Hope) Polish-German Foundation.

Since the 1990's, the municipality has intensively developed its international relations with cities in Germany, Belgium, Italy, Sweden, France and the Netherlands. Local authorities of these cities place special emphasis on youth exchange, training of local government officers and sharing experiences regarding administration.  In 1999, Szamotuły hosted a meeting entitled "Festival of Europe". The European Commission recognized the long-standing international cooperation, and in 1995 included Szamotuły in the group of ten leading partner towns around the world awarded with "Golden Stars of Partnership".

Municipal Investment Magnet

Roman Handschuh, Mayor of Szamotuły says:
The local authorities in Szamotoły are fully aware of the fact that a modern and efficient technical and municipal infrastructure constitutes the best magnet for investors.
The town and municipality are making up for the backlogs fast. We are putting our natural environment in order, investing in facilities for waste processing, and planning to build a county utilization, segregation and recycling plant.
Although the local water, telecommunications and sewerage networks are at acceptable levels, we are still modernizing and expanding sewage management and protection of ground waters, and expanding storm water and sanitation drainage. Moreover, we are continuing the expansion of our gas network, which will be completed in October 2001.
However, the elimination of heavy traffic from the town, represents a major investment, requiring the reconstruction of streets and a bridge on the Sam River.
Our local sports complex includes two football pitches, six tennis courts and a hotel. Soon, it will be expanded to include an indoor swimming pool. The sports center will have a six-lane swimming pool, recreation area, slide, spectator tribunes, and catering facilities.  The complex will be equipped with facilities for the disabled and those requiring aquatic therapy. All these require large outlays.
What is more, we have earmarked plots of land that cover an area of several dozen hectares in three different parts of the town for investments in industry, trade and services and housing construction. These plots are easily accessible and equipped with full technical infrastructure.
A well developed technical infrastructure and close proximity to Poznań and the A-2 freeway make Szamotuły a perfect venue for establishing various types of businesses. We have built a municipal investment magnet and strongly believe that it will attract investors to Szamotuły.
