Giżycko, which is known as the summer capital of northeast Poland,
is located in the heart of the Mazury Lakeland. Due to its attractive
location, the town is visited by large numbers of tourists. In order
to meet their expectations and to make their stay even more attractive,
a number of cultural, sports and recreational events are organized
there. Just this year Giżycko witnessed two major events; the "Wawel
Cup 2001" International Orienteering Competition, and the "AIT
2001" International Rally of Cyclist Tourists. A number of
annual events, such as Festival of Sailor Songs and the Ukleja Festival
draw thousands of fans each year.
Giżycko, with a population of 31,000, is a relatively young town,
as 27% of its residents are below 18. It is for them that local
authorities are trying to draw investors to the region. In order
to improve the local infrastructure, in 2000, the town earmarked
for municipal investments PLN 8,456,901, which constitutes 21.5%
of Giżycko's total income. The investments included improvements
in the sanitary sewerage network, roads and pavements in the city.
This year, a sewage treatment plant will be modernized and will
meet all required standards as a result. The investment's value
is estimated at approx. PLN 15 million.

In addition, Giżycko has a number of investment sites on offer.
The offer includes a 20-ha lot located in the city center on Lake
Niegocin designated as a future trade and service complex.
In addition, in the northern part of the town, local authorities
intend to establish a production and service park, where manufacturing,
service and storage facilities will be placed. Among other things,
the park should include manufacturing plants, craftsmen' shops,
services for the transportation sector, stores and warehouses, as
well as catering facilities. The industrial district has immediate
access to the Giżycko beltway, which is also a transit route that
ferries traffic in all directions. Giżycko has drawn up updated
town planning studies of the areas offered for sale.

Last, but not least, the city offers opportunities for investing
in the Boyen Fortress, which is a very interesting example of 19th
c. military architecture. Built in the shape of an irregular polygon,
in addition to several kilometers of embankments and walls, the
Fortress includes a number of attractive structures and buildings,
which can be designated for tourist and leisure facilities. The
Boyen Fortress has a fair chance of becoming one of the major tourist
attractions in the town and Giżycko County. The Spatial Development
Study for Giżycko and the Sustainable Development Strategy for Giżycko
have already confirmed this statement.
