- Although we do not have any amber mines in Kołobrzeg, during
storm weather, you can find large amber nuggets on the beach. Some
holiday resorts organize competitions for amber hunters; this is
one of the tourist attractions. Also popular are salt-water springs
exploited for medical purposes - baths and inhalations or rehabilitation
exercises and brine pools. These are waters with a high content
of sodium, bromine, iodine salts with 5-6% concentration. Kołobrzeg
mineral water, “Perła Bałtyku”, produced on the basis of this water
is characteristic for its high level of minerals and it is one of
the best in Poland. We should also mention that our brine is the
best for pickling cucumbers for winter. With tourists in mind, we
have also reconstructed our historical saltworks.
- Kołobrzeg is a well known and popular health resort, a place of
tourist interest and a holiday resort. Is the „big city” aura of
Kołobrzeg not disturbing to the heath resort visitors?
- It seems that this aura only increases the attraction of staying
in our town for those on holidays and those coming here for health
reasons.
For a holiday resort, Koło-brzeg is big: over 48 thousand residents,
an area of 2.5 thousand hectares. However, its benefit is the variety
offered. We have the so called city, namely the town’s historical
section with its beautiful old town, museums, shopping network,
but also the section intended for tourist facilities and health
resorts which is at the same time a limited car traffic zone - it
has a beautiful beach, promenade, pier, amphitheater. We are also
expanding the cycling routes. Our guests are also recommended to
try fishing in Baltic and the Parsęta River (one of the cleanest
in Poland), water sports, horse rides and paragliding. These attractions
bring many tourists to Kołobrzeg. A large number come from abroad:
60% of our foreign tourists are Germans and the rest are mainly
Scandinavians. During the season, we host some 250 thousand people.

- In the rating of attractive poviat towns published by the Institute
of the Market Economy Research, Kołobrzeg came fourth out of 256 Polish
towns. What led to this result?
- The research was conducted based on the data of the Chief Statistical
Office, the National Bank of Poland and the Ministry of Finance, grouped
in nine “factors of investment attractiveness”. We had very positive results
in all of the above categories and in five of them we had the highest
score. Thus, Kołobrzeg belongs to the «A» class of Polish towns. The jury
appreciated the tourist attractions of our town, the economic transformation,
stability of the local political scene and development of social institutions,
as well as the level of education of Kołobrzeg residents or presence of
science and research institutes, which directly affects the quality of
the employment market.

In addition, we are also pleased with the following awards: title of
the West Pomerania Treasure 2001 won in the contest organized by the regional
Szczecin Television stations and the first place in the Internet poll
in which Poles chose the Summer Capital of Poland. We were higher regarded
than either Kraków or Zakopane.
- Throughout the centuries, the main export commodity from the area of
the Parsęta River was salt. This was the beginning of the amber and salt
trails leading towards the center of Poland, as well as to the Danish
islands and the Baltic countries. Does Kołobrzeg salt and amber still
offer some earning potential that could supplement the town’s budget?
