"Agenda 21 Strategy for Sustainable
Development of Kwidzyn" is not one of many documents
that are put on a shelf and waiting for better
times', but stands for a dynamic social and economic
process implemented in the city. Many issues and
social problems included in the program are being
solved by NGOs and special emphasis is placed
on improving the quality of municipal companies'
work, whose services affect the quality of local
residents' life, to mention the quality of potable
water, heating, cleanness in the city and air.
Waste Treatment Plant and Waste Management
In 1998, on the initiative of city authorities,
a Waste Treatment Plant was established, which
today provides waste selection and collection
services to almost all Kwidzyn County. The Waste
Treatment Plant has assumed certain basic tasks,
which include: closing and rehabilitation of the
existing landfill in Bądki, the implementation
of a waste selection program in the municipalities
of Kwidzyn County, and the construction of a cutting
edge landfill in Gilwa Mała. The plant has consistently
implemented and expanded the waste selection program.
It has placed in different parts of the city more
than 700 containers for selective collection of
paper, glass and plastics. Selective collection
program also includes hazardous waste, such as
old batteries, fluorescent lamps and expired drugs.
As a result, service life of the existing landfill
in Bądki has been expanded, which will in turn
allow for efficient use of the landfill in Gilwa
Mała that is currently being built. The new landfill
will be a state-of-the-art treatment plant meeting
all EU requirements. The landfill will serve all
Kwidzyn County residents, but this is the City
that makes largest investment outlays in its construction.

Kwidzyn Water and Sewage Company Spółka z o.o.
- Investments in Improving the Quality of Potable
Water and Protection of the Liwa River
The main task of Kwidzyn Water and Sewage Company
Sp. z o.o. is the provision of potable water to
local residents and businesses as well as municipal
and industrial sewage management. In order to
improve the quality of potable water, a new Water
Purification Plant has been built in Kamionka
near Kwidzyn and Water Purification Plant in Kwidzyn
has been modernized. Total investment costs amounted
to approx. PLN 15 mln. As a result, water quality
parameters meet all EU standards.
The Company transfers municipal and industrial
waste via a pumping station in Kwidzyn to the
water treatment plant of International Paper -
Kwidzyn S.A. An old sewage treatment plant in
Kwidzyn, which discharged effluent to the Liwa
River, was modernized and transformed into the
pumping station and discharge pipe that transports
sewage to the International Paper Company's treatment
plant.
All improvements introduced in Kwidzyn's municipal
companies have been made in order to improve local
residents' quality of life and economic condition
and to ensure them their right to live in clean
environment. Thanks to the cooperation of municipal
companies and the implementation of the Kwidzyn's
sustainable development program, the activities
taken so far have already brought positive results,
i.e. local residents are provided with quality
potable water and actively engaged in the performance
of ecological mission by selecting waste, for
example.
