Knurów - Town of Grand Opportunities
Rozmowa z Adamem Ramsem,
prezydentem miasta

- Can you comment on the local
elections results in your town?
- For the first time in the history, local communities
had an opportunity to directly elect mayors and
heads of municipalities. They made democratic
decisions that should not be questioned. For that
reason, I would rather not comment on the choice
of the residents of Knurów. I respect their decisions
and appreciate the trust they have placed in me.
At the same time, I am aware of the weight of
problems and issues I am expected to solve. While
performing the function of the mayor of Knurów,
I will do my best in order to promote the development
of the town and will work not to betray the trust.
- What developments, according to the new mayor,
will the next four years bring to the residents
of Knurów?
- I would like to implement my election program,
as I believe it greatly contributed to my success.
I want to ensure open and honest public life.
I am going to tackle the challenges Knurów and
its residents are faced with. Here I mean, unemployment,
security issues and the difficult situation in
the mining industry.

- What do you have to do to transform the
city from a mining center into an investor-friendly
hub promoting various trades.
- In order to activate a city economy, you need
to concentrate on two issues. First of all, you
need to create favorable conditions for the development
of local entrepreneurship. Secondly, you need
to attract external investors to the town. Knurów
offers a great deal of potential, which we intend
to harness. We need to bring business circles
closer together, develop long-term development
programs and use the favorable geographical location
of Knurów on the map of the region. The citys
location at the crossing of two of Polands largest
motorways, the A4 and A1, and the A1 motorway
hub are among the key assets that we can use to
attract capital to the region.
- Residents of Knurów worked hard to prepare
for Polands accession to the European Union.
Last September, the Eurobus" came to the city,
and for three years local high school students
have participated in the Socrates Comenius Program
and implemented the Planspil" project, designed
to provide information on how international corporations
operate in the European Union. Will this promote
entrepreneurial attitudes and prepare them to
compete in the demanding job market?
- In the next few years, the young generation
will enter their adult life in a brand new reality.
The struggle for a democratic Poland will be for
them merely a few pages in the history books.
European integration is a great opportunity and
challenge for this part of the globe. What is
more, it can become a driving force behind our
future economic success. And you need to be prepared
for this new reality. You need to have a good
educational background and experience. This is
why I see a bright future for the young residents
of Knurów.
- Knurów has already gained renown on the national
arena. In 1999, 2000, and 2001, the city was the
winner of Environmentally Friendly", an ecological
competition organized under the patronage of the
President of the Republic of Poland, and was awarded
the title of Patron of Polish Ecology. In November
of last year, Fundacja Rozwoju Kardiochirurgii
(Fund for the Development of Cardiosurgery) run
by Prof. Religa awarded the municipality with
the Oskar Serca (Heart Oscar). Can you expect
similar successes in the future?
- I strongly believe that Knurów is a town of
grand opportunities and the most spectacular successes
are yet to come. All titles and awards are of
great importance to us, as they add to the towns
prestige. However, what is most important to the
local community is the economic success of Knurów,
which we hope to achieve in order to ensure its
stable operation during the course of the restructuring
of the mining sector.
