Sulechów - Many Strengths and Effective Operations

Panorama talks to Ignacy Odważny,
Mayor of Sulechów

wersja polska

- You have been the president of a leading construction company, county councilor, and recently have been elected mayor of Sulechów. To what extent has your professional experience influenced your election agenda, which has been widely approved of by the residents of Sulechów Municipality?
- Being a head of a construction company with experience in adjusting its operations to the requirements of the market economy has facilitated the creation of my electoral program. During my work as President of the Committee for the Development and Promotion on the Zielona Góra County Council, I came across several issues that I intend to solve during my term in office.
During the election, I was the candidate of a wide group of people, including voters related with trade and business circles who hoped that I would promote changes in the economic conditions in the city.

- Drawing domestic and foreign investors to the city is a top priority in your policy. How do you intend to attract them to come to Sulechów?
- Sulechów municipality has many strengths. We have developed investment sites and intend to provide new ones with utility supplies. We offer investors preferential treatment and real estate tax abatements. In 1999, a state-of-the-art, newly expanded waste treatment plant was brought on line. It provides services to the town and neighboring villages. With funding from SAPARD, we are commencing construction on a sewerage network in the village of Kruszyna.
The Sulechów Municipality is favorably located on major transportation routes, including the Ystad-Jakuszyce domestic road no. 3 and the Gubin-Poznań (east-west) route, and in the vicinity of the Polish-German border. Our other strengths include a municipal landfill that was put into use two months ago and a well-developed social infrastructure. We are the only municipal town in Poland that boasts a school of higher education. Our State Vocational School provides education in the field of public administration, agriculture and tourism. Moreover, local students can be trained at the nearby University of Zielona Góra.
Moreover, our local hospital has the most modern Rehabilitation and Gynecology and Maternity Departments in the region. The latter was the leader in the 3rd competition entitled “Rodzić po ludzku" (Humane Birthing).
In Sulechów, the business environment is well developed, with four banks, insurance companies, lawyers’ offices, real estate agencies, and a branch of the Social Security Fund
In order to improve the work of the Sulechów Town Office, I intend to implement a quality management system in accordance with ISO 9001:2000 there.
- You are also striving for the establishment of a sub-zone of the Kostrzyn-Słubice SEZ in the municipality. Do you believe that a Special Economic Zone is a cure for all economic problems?
- Sulechów Municipality, just like the rest of Poland, suffers from unemployment. I believe that the establishment of the sub-zone in Sulechów would result in several pro-developmental initiatives, as the Special Economic Zone offers preferences to investors, both domestic and from abroad. We can provide utilities to a 15 ha area, including water and sewerage lines, regardless of the fact whether it is granted the status of a sub-zone or not. I also intend to acquire investment sites located around Sulechów at an attractive price. These sites could be transferred free of charge to entrepreneurs who would build new plants and provide jobs in the region.
- During your electoral campaign, you emphasized the importance of the town’s image. Will you make Sulechów a more attractive town?
- I will announce tenders for the revitalization of the old town area and a Calvinist church. Just as in Zielona Góra, a historic site conservator would need to approve the changes and relevant documentation.
