Drawieński
National Park

wersja polska

Drava is the name of a river that originates in Italy, runs through Austria, Slovenia and Croatia to empty into the Mura River. However, there is another river with the same name that flows in Poland and which has been a favorite spot of Karol Wojtyła. The Pope-to-be was enchanted with the Polish Drawa, which is the most picturesque canoeing route in the Pomorskie Lakeland district. In its old-growth forests, rich fauna and flora have been preserved among the picturesque scenery of the river, whose current at points has the strength of a whitewater river. On May 1, 1990, this area was incorporated into the Drawieński National Park.
Throughout the Park's 11,000 hectares, the postglacial landscape of the Drawska Primeval Forest is protected. In the valleys of the Drawa and Płociczna Rivers, which periodically flood, alder river carrs and unique ash and elm trees, and marshy meadows are found. In the treetops, live the kingfisher, goosander, and common goldeneye. In the rivers, populations of trout, bull-head and salmon can be found. In the Park, beaver and otter live, and the latter is depicted in the Park's emblem.
Moreover, in the forests of the Drawieński National Park, over a dozen of lakes are located, the largest being Lake Ostrowieckie with an area of 387 ha. Tourists who come to the Park in large numbers say that this is the most beautiful lake of the Pomorskie Lakeland. As early as before WWII, three islands situated on the lake had the status of nature reserves, as cormorants, ospreys, and eagle owls nest there and populations of lake trout, powan and white-fish populate the waters.

At a distance of only 1 km, in northwestern part of the municipality a group of lakes is situated. The largest of the group is Lake Osiek, with an area of 6.1 km and a length of 10 km. Such natural properties are conducive to the development of recreation and tourism.
