750 years ago, Henryk III, the
Prince of Wrocław, granted a town charter to the
settlement located on the Barycz River, opposite
the old Slavic Zunigrod. The founding charter
was issued on May 15th, 1253. The location of
the town on the route from Silesia to Wielkopolska
spurred its economic growth. The efforts of subsequent
generations of residents resulted in the present
image and condition of the town and municipality.
These achievements were appreciated in the prestigious
Dolnośląski Klucz Sukcesu (Lower Silesia Key to
Success) plebiscite, and Żmigród was awarded a
Key to Success for the thriftiest rural and town
municipality in 2001. It was a special prize for
the local authorities since Żmigród proved better
in this plebiscite than other municipalities with
larger budgets.
Numerous investments make the thriftiness of the
municipality evident. The water supply was expanded
to include the entire municipality. Each village
can be reached by asphalt road. The construction
of a junior high school and a sports hall that
meet the highest standards has been completed.
Work on the comprehensive control of the Sąsiecznica
River is in progress and the construction of the
"Jamnik" retention reservoir is about to start.
Both investments are included in the Strategy
for the Development of the Dolnośląskie Province.
This constitutes an opportunity for effective
flood protection and the development of tourist
and recreation facilities in the municipality.

The opening of a beltway in 2002 offered new
opportunities to the municipality. The land along
the beltway and the No. 5 national road linking
Wrocław and Poznań is especially attractive to
investors, and Żmigród aims at creating an investment-friendly
atmosphere. At present, work is being conducted
to adopt a resolution on offering a real estate
tax exemption to investors.
The town's location in the Barycz River Valley
Landscape Park, a unique animal, bird, and plant
refuge of significance on a European scale, makes
Żmigród even more special. Forests comprise almost
one third of the municipality's area. Nature reserves
are among the most interesting destinations here.
They include "Stawy Milickie" (1500 hectares)
with rare water-bird species, "Radziądz" and "Żmigródek"
with old trees such as a 120-year-old pine and
a 130-year-old oak, and other 300- to 400-year-old
oaks with trunk measurements ranging from 2.5
to 4.6 m.
Fishing farms are typical of the local landscape
and cover ca 4.5% of the municipal area (1,400
hectares). Commercial fisheries in Ruda Żmigrodzka
and Kaszyce Milickie are highly popular with anglers.
Tourists fond of sightseeing will undoubtedly
find the local palace-and-park complex with a
tower, castle ruins and old trees very attractive.
Additionally, the old religious architecture of
Żmigród is especially valuable. Art and history
experts can see penance crosses and old settlements.
The tourist offer of the municipality will be
soon expanded, since cycling routes running through
the most attractive areas, including the Trzebnickie
Hills, are being developed.
Preparations for the 750th anniversary of the
town and the Roman Catholic parish of Żmigród
have been in progress for a long time. The celebration
will start on May 15th with a mass in the 16th-century
parish church and round off with a concert of
the Wałbrzych Philharmonic Orchestra. On May 16th
and 17th the town will be under the young residents'
control and the symbolic town keys will be handed
over to them by Zdzisław Średniawski, the Mayor
of Żmigród. Concerts and other events will take
place in the Sports and Recreation Center. The
celebration will end with a picnic near the keep
on May 18th.
Let's meet in Żmigród then!
