Siedlce - An active city

Panorama talks with Mirosław Symanowicz,
the Mayor of Siedlce

wersja polska

- Siedlce is situated on the international route leading from Lisbon to Moscow through Paris and Berlin. What direct benefits does the city derive from this location?
- The location of Siedlce on one of the most important transportation routes is an undisputed asset for our city. The Berlin-Moscow railway line, which is currently being modernised and transformed into a "fast railway", allows for convenient connections between the city, the rest of the country, and our eastern neighbours Belarus and Russia. Thanks to the modernisation of the railway line, it will not be long before the journey to the capital will take less than 40 minutes. What will further improve access to the city is the planned East-West motorway, to be completed in 2009. This is especially important if you consider the city's development and its convenience for investment or conducting business activities.

- What do you perceive as your priority in managing Siedlce?
- I attach great importance to the sustainable development of our city. As a regional center to be reckoned with, Siedlce plays a vital role in promoting business and social activities in the eastern regions of the Mazowieckie Province. That is why the activities of our local government are directed at harmonious development in a lot of areas. In addition to pro-ecological and pro-social undertakings, we emphasise the need to develop a modern, competitive economy. The notion of being an open city with open-minded inhabitants also applies to education, which is of very good quality here. We have created a system of integrated education in Siedlce which allows for starting the education process in a kindergarten and continue it all the way to Podlaska Academy, the largest integrated institution of higher education in Poland. The development of business-related services is a very positive phenomenon. Their availability and quality are fundamental factors in determining our city's attractiveness for investment. We can also observe profitable changes in the image of our city, and are witnessing a continuous increase in the standard of living of our inhabitants. In the last ranking conducted by Polityka weekly, Siedlce ranked 12 among the 66 cities in Poland in terms of standard of living, and that is a very good position.

- To what extent do EU funds change Siedlce?
- The European Union has provided new opportunities for local governments. Our aim is to use them as fully as possible, which is what we are in fact doing now. I am positive that this will create a lot of interesting initiatives in Siedlce in such areas as modern sewage and water supply management, waste management, building sports and recreation facilities, developing a municipal IT network, and further modernisation of the city transportation fleet.
